2019-20.   pheasant feathers

People in Cologne know it well, on 11th November the streets fill up. The ‘Jecken’ (how you call a carnivalist in Cologne) take over the city.

For most of them, carnival is an affair of the heart, 11th November and Carnival Monday are public holidays. Even the smallest ‘Panz’ (little child) awaits the 5th season with joy.

Carnival is a bit more difficult in the Ruhr area. The people, shaped by coal and steel, are ‘jeck’ in a different way.

Nevertheless, there are clubs that maintain carnival customs and keep them alive. While many traditional clubs are threatened with extinction, as there is often a lack of young people, there are people in Herne who have carnival in their blood and live the customs - and not just during the session.

For her project “Pheasent Feathers”, Vera Loitzsch accompanied the 1. Herner Karnevalsgesellschaft 1953 eV for several weeks.
As a Cologne native, driven by the carnival in her heart, she examined the carnival hustle and bustle in Herne and the club life from the off-season up to the proclamation of the new prince couple, the official start of the carnival session.
